Handmade Ceramic Platter 14 Ukraine
Handmade earthenware platter by Ivan Bobkob. Ivan's food-safe pottery is decorated with bird imagery, a triumphant symbol for Ukrainians representing freedom, rebellion and determination. Ivan’s pots are painted with birds and Ornek ornamentation, a system of specific symbols embedded with meaning and used by the Crimean Tartar communities. Ornek ornamentation is applied to wood working, weaving, pottery glass, wall paintings and jewelry. (Ornek ornamentation has been placed on the National List of Elements of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine.) The cream colored plate has a whimsical bird. Colors: muted teal, evergreen, periwinkle blue, Prussian blue and charcoal.
We met Ivan at the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe in 2021. Since the invasion we’ve reached out to Ivan hoping to learn how we might help. A month or more would go by and we’d not hear anything. Finally, we learned that he’d managed to scrounge building materials and repair his studio, more or less. And so we settled on a plan: if he could make pottery, in between teaching elementary art and his military duties, and if he could get the pottery to us, we’d buy his pottery at retail and sell it in the shop. We are honored to be representing his work. All proceeds go to Ivan. Imperfections in the glaze and clay are part of the process and should not be considered a flaw.
