Ichcha

Ichcha means “a wish” in Hindi—a wish to preserve traditional textile arts, to create thoughtfully, and to support the artisans who keep these traditions alive. At its heart, Ichcha is a commitment to honoring heritage techniques while building sustainable, long-term partnerships with artisan families in India.

Their work centers on slow, intentional craftsmanship. Each design begins as a hand-drawn pattern that is carefully carved into wooden blocks by master artisans. Before printing begins, the fabric is prepared through multiple washes, allowing natural fibers to fully absorb the dyes. Using these carved blocks, each design is printed by hand, layer by layer, followed by additional washing and sun-drying. The cloth is then immersed in dye baths made from natural sources like flowers and bark. Throughout this process, the fabric passes through the skilled hands of printers and dyers who work with immense patience. The subtle variations in every piece reflect the beauty of a tradition rooted in deep respect for both craft and earth.

Across their collections—from hand-printed curtains and table linens to block-printed scarves and zero-waste bags—the heart of Ichcha remains the artisans. Many of the women they partner with work from their homes, allowing them to earn a fair income while caring for their families. Their zero-waste bags are created from leftover block-printed fabrics, ensuring that even the smallest remnants are thoughtfully repurposed. Each piece carries the care, skill, and quiet strength of the hands that made it.
